First, make sure to understand a student’s unique situation and allow them to feel heard. It is crucial to you foster a safe meeting environment for students

Second, clarify what you can and can’t do

Third, make sure that you understand the responsibility and liability of your position

Fourth, delineate the boundary of help that you are allowed to offer

Fifth, make sure to check if you are required to report any crimes or sexual violence against students or on campus

Sixth, listen carefully and support the decision
