Announcement of Follow-Up to the 2015 Idea Competition for Promoting Human Rights and Gender Equality

The KAIST Center for Human Rights and Ethics is pleased to announce a follow-up to the Idea Competition for Promoting Human Rights and Gender Equality, which was run for one month from Oct. 22 to Nov. 20 in 2015. As a result, a total of 33 suggestions have been accepted and after eliminating duplicate suggestions, we referred 28 suggestions to the pertinent departments on Jan 6, 2016.

In response to our request to deliver a reply by Friday, Feb. 5, responses have been made on 17 suggestions. The following is the list of the outlined responses we received. Upon receiving the further responses, we will continue to post them on the website.

Suggestion

On-campus facilities for people with disabilities

Feedback and Improvement Scheme

- Strengthening efforts to effectively maintain bicycle parking areas in order to prevent scattered bicycles from blocking the passage of wheelchairs (including installation of signs)

- Campus police is conducting crackdown on the vehicles parked illegally in a space designated for disabled parking.

Launch of gynecological services

- Launching gynecological services at the KAIST Clinic starting March 2016 (To offer primary care services for the treatment and prevention of gynecological diseases)

Structural alteration of the OLEV on-campus shuttle bus for people with disabilities

Feedback and Improvement Scheme

-It is actually impossible to make irrevocable alterations to the shuttle buses because the shuttle service is currently run under the contract with an outsourcing provider, and there are difficulties in securing necessary budgets.

- Including a provision specifying alterations for the people with disabilities will be considered when selecting a shuttle service provider in the future.

Suggestion

Provision of computers with the operating system language set in English

Feedback and Improvement Scheme

- The operating system language of one out of the five computers (at the shared computer room of the Department of New Materials and Engineering) will be switched to English. In consideration of the usage rate of the future, the operating system language of more computers will be switched to English.

- The English version of Windows will be installed in 10 percent of the shared computers at the Department of Business and Technology Management (3 computers).

Helper program for international students to use libraries

- Designation of a librarian for international students

- The designated librarian will team up with work-study students to deal with inquiries of international students including borrowing books.

Support for international students

- Offering cultural diversity training courses including Humanity/Leadership III and "Muslims in the Present Age," and the buddy program designed to help freshmen international students adjust to the Korean culture and campus life by associating with Korean friends

- Expanding support for the events aimed at promoting cultural diversity Student Center-1

- Installing a bulletin board for language exchange in the lobby of the Student Center I(W2) and providing publicity assistance to encourage students' voluntary participation

- Establishing and implementing guidelines for posting notices and announcements in the Portal site

Suggestion

Publication of reports on human rights violations and discriminations

Feedback and Improvement Scheme

- Publication of on-campus human rights violation cases will be considered seriously in consideration of preventing disclosure of the identity of the parties concerned and accumulation of violation cases.

- The National Human Rights Commission of Korea is publishing a report on human rights violations annually.

- A collection of on-campus human rights violations was recently posted on the website of the Center for Human Rights and Ethics.

Urinals inside men's washroom being visible from outside

Feedback and Improvement Scheme

- Conditions of men's washrooms on campus will be investigated first. Initially, the Center for Human Rights and Ethics and Graduate Students Association will join forces to make and apply stickers encouraging people to close the entrance door of the washroom without fail.

Event ideas for the promotion of cultural diversity

Feedback and Improvement Scheme

- The Center for Human Rights and Ethics and Graduate Students Association will discuss ways to accommodate the suggested ideas in organizing events in the future.
